Shooting Last Night

Posted by Brendan on June 27th, 2008 filed in Philadelphia, crime, guns, violence

We stayed in last night and watched the charming and hilarious Lars and the Real Girl. Across the street in the park there was a huge basketball contest that had been going on since before I got home from work, tons of kids shooting hoops.
Sometime around 8:30 or 9:00 we heard a familiar POP [...]

Iraqi Women Raped at Abu Ghraib

Posted by Brendan on October 31st, 2007 filed in anger, fascism, violence, war

UPDATE
From alex in comments:
Brendan-

I remember photos from a military rape fetish website being picked up by Al-Jazeera in ‘04 or so when Abu Ghraib broke. I think these are from the same photographer or website:
1.The uniforms are wrong- those are the [...]

Bullet Points

Posted by Brendan on July 27th, 2007 filed in Philadelphia, violence

It’s been mighty slow here at brendancalling lately, save for a few choice shots at Arlen Specter and a tour of my totally random sense of humor.
Part of it’s the heat and the summer doldrums, part of it’s the natural cycle of creativity, part of it… well, whatever.

A Moment of Silence? Why?

Posted by Brendan on April 20th, 2007 filed in plain pitiful, violence, war

Yesterday on my way home from work, I heard the our Governor was asking for a state-wide moment of silence for the victims of the Virginia tech shooting rampage. Why?
Look, I am just as shocked and horrified by the carnage as anyone else, but you know what? Here’s what happened in Baghdad the [...]

Posted by Brendan on April 20th, 2007 filed in Philadelphia, death, violence

More on the young man who was murdered outside my window:
Leon Blackwell’s family moved to Williamsport in 1998 to get away from the dangers of Philadelphia. They moved back a year and a half ago to be with an ill family member.
The return proved fatal for the 19-year-old Blackwell.
Last week, as he sat on an [...]
