Israel Really Messed Up
I’m not in a particularly bloggy mood this week (which usually means the next 24 hours will be filled with nothing but blogging), but I’ve certainly been reading an awful lot. My main focus continues to be what’s going on in the Gulf, but the Israeli raid on the flotilla to Gaza is causing quite the shitstorm.
I think their government really fucked up. Israel attacked, in international waters, a ship flying the flag of their only Muslim ally, the Turks, and proceeded to shoot civilians in cold blood. These civilians were not your standard dirty fucking hippies either. At least four Turks died in the attack: not good. Also on the ships, European legislators, a holocaust survivor, and a number of high-profile activists:
Some 700 pro-Palestinian activists were on the boats. They included an Italian cardinal, several Orthodox Jews, 1976 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire of Northern Ireland, European legislators and an elderly Holocaust survivor. Also among them were Ann wright, a retired United States Army colonel, and a former US diplomat who resigned in 2003 to protest then President George Bush’s war on Iraq.
Israel claims the activists had ties to al Qaeda. that didn’t go over too well:
[Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu] ridiculed Israeli claims that some in the flotilla were linked to al-Qaeda.
Members of the European Parliament were on board, he noted, adding archly that he didn’t know that “al-Qaeda had infiltrated the European Parliament.”
Ouch. Meanwhile, as the rest of the world condemns the attack, Israel’s Big Brother, aka the United States, supports Israel 100%.
Pretty soon we are going to be their only ally. And that’s not good for anyone.
