More Daily News Pig Pile

Philadelphia, calling bullshit, media December 1st, 2009

I could give a rat’s ass about Tiger Woods, but I think today’s issue of the Philadelphia Daily News more than proves the point I made yesterday about its penchant for the mindless pigpile.

here’s sports writer Bill Conlin:

According to the unofficial physical evidence, Woods climbed into his black Escalade alone for reasons that have not been revealed by Tiger, Elin or anybody else in the entourage of speed-dial sycophants surrounding a man who, for about a dozen 4-day weekends a year, holds the golfing world – and millions outside it – in total thrall. I don’t think it’s a reach to suggest that with Tiger and his African-American/Asian ethnicity on one side and Oprah, the ultimate, self-made, minority woman on the other, a climate of tolerance unprecedented in America helped make possible the election of President Obama.

Just as the mythical Icarus crashed to earth because he got so close to the sun that the wax on his wings melted, Tiger Woods has toppled to earth with an emphatic thud.

Honestly, who gives a fuck what a private citizen does with his dick? Well, Jenice Armstrong for one, who doesn’t believe famous people deserve any privacy:

DOES TIGER WOODS have a right to privacy?

Not really.

If he were really serious about not wanting people all up in his business, the way to do it is by staying away from the limelight.

Woods hasn’t done that. He intentionally set out to use the squeaky-clean image he earned as the world’s most successful golfer to make millions more in product endorsements.

And now that something appears amiss and fans sense that all isn’t picture-perfect in Tigerland, he wants to go silent? Not a good move.

Woods owes his fans more than that.

Yeah, we’re being nosy.

But people who have supported his career and have bought the products he endorsed have a right to know what’s going on. I admit I’m curious. What exactly happened during that early-morning run-in with a fire hydrant? Why has he refused to talk with the police?

The less Woods says, the more people speculate.

OK, Armstrong MIGHT have a point if our taxes were going to support Mr. Woods’ career (that would actually make him a public figure), but since they don’t who gives a fuck?

For that matter, I might add that Jenice Armstrong is a local celeb herself, so obviously it would be OK if I began to speculate on whether Jenice Armstrong regularly meets a young man at least 10 years her junior every Thursday for lunch, after which they go to a seedy motel for the rest of the day. The less she says, the more people speculate…

Meanwhile Tiger’s penis is also the topic of an op-ed piece at the Daily News opinion page (no opinion on the President’s plan to escalate the war in Afghanistan however, probably because they didn’t want to speculate):

If this is all about a private matter where no harm was done, why does Woods need such flashy representation?

Either Tiger Woods has something to hide – or he doesn’t.

If he doesn’t, things can still be cleared up quite quickly.

If he does, all the more reason to come forward and put the facts on the table. Because, if you’re a public figure, today’s media-saturated world is no place for secrets.

So to repeat what I wrote just yesterday at the weekly, the DN and the Inky both have a pattern of playing pig pile and trying to boil any issue down to black and white, instead of clarifying and spreading information.

That’s not journalism or even commentary: that’s just hysteria in print form, and it makes it awfully hard to root for my bankrupt local dailies.

    My criteria is simpler:
*1* Is the celebrity being accused of a violent or nonconsensual act (incl. instances where consent is nonapplicable – e.g. pedophilia)?
*2* Does the celebrity feel the need to use his/her celebrity to preach hate based on adult consexual activity to elevate themselves?

If not, what do I care? David Letterman, WGAF? Hugh Grant, WGAF? To a degree, Bill Clinton, WGAF (althought he didn’t go anti-gay, he certainly had the power to push sexual policics forward, instead staying in neutral)?

But Carrie Prejean, I rub my hands in glee she is embarrassed! I hope someone has proof and shows it soon about Sarah Palin’s with Todd’s business partner – oh how I would dance the schaedenfreude jig! Larry Craig, Mark Sanford – thanks for playing, leave the national arena now!

yeah, i should have included that as well.

I also find it hilarious when moralizing hypocrites get caught with their pants down.
