unlike Josh, I can’t give the guy any real credit. If he’d resigned last week, he would have saved his wife and family a lot of public humiliation. And considering that Sanford has taken it upon himself to vote against same sex marriage and civil unions in south carolina and voted to ban gay adoptions in DC, I don’t think anyone should cut the flaming hypcrite any slack at all. Live by the bigotry, die by the bigotry, motherfucker.

So i call major bullshit on crocodile tears:

He told reporters he spent “the last five days of my life crying in Argentina” and the affair is now over. Sanford, a rumored 2012 presidential candidate, refused to say whether he’ll leave office.

That his staff spent the whole week lying for him (never a good sign), and that he personally says he was “‘taken aback by all of the interest in his trip” tells me he didn’t expect the shit to hit the fan. in other words, he’s crying because he got caught.

   I think we want to be lied to by our elected officials. We want Republicans to lecture us about sex and morality even though we know they’re full of shit. We want Democrats to talk about economic justice while they don’t pay their taxes.

   We elect people who lie to us- we can have tax cuts, increased spending and balanced budgets. It’s easier than actually deciding between two unpleasant (but necessary) choices. I think it’s because we don’t want the responsibility of liberty. We want the illusion of freedom without the costs or consequences.

   That’s why we will continue to elect these people.
