Deconstructing Blue Grass Lyrics: “Cold Sheets of Rain”
Cover your ears, it’s horrible
I’ve seen the lightning flashin’ I’ve heard the thunder roar
Somewhere on the dark side of town
My baby’s with a new love the wind is howlin’ on
I should be with her right nowCold sheets of rain pouring down is my love safe and warm
Where is she sleeping now
Cold sheets of rain pouring downWell I worry so about her she’s afraid of storms
She needs someone to ease her mind
She needs someone with her to keep her safe and warm
Someone who’s patient and kindCold sheets of rain pouring down is my love safe and warm
Where is she sleeping now
Cold sheets of rain pouring down
Cold Sheets of Rain
I don’t know who wrote this song and I don’t care either. All I know is I hear it at nearly every bluegrass festival I go to, and I hate it with a passion. The melody is insipid, and while the musicianship is technically impressive, it’s about as emotionally unsatisfying as an unflavored Slurpee.
It’s also lyrically inane. The singer wants to know where his girlfriend is, because it’s raining and she’s afraid of precipitation. he;s also concerned that she needs someone to keep her safe, warm etc.
Hey ASSHOLE: read your first verse. She’s with her “new love.” Maybe you THINK you should be with her, but she clearly doesn’t feel the same way. She found someone who’s not you. And unless the new fellow’s homeless, the odds are she’s indoors somewhere.
…adding, she’s probably doing it RIGHT NOW with the new guy and comparing your penis unfavorably to his. How’s that make you feel, Mr. Bad Songwriter whose narrative makes no sense?
