Pro-life People are FUCKED UP.

I was offline and busy all weekend, and while I heard a snippet or two of George Tiller’s murder, after listening to NPR for nearly 2 hours this morning, I have heard almost nothing about the crime. Ah wait: 8:15, and here we go.

i will just come out and say it, because I’m not known for mincing words. Pro-life people are deeply disturbed, fucked up people. They put the “lives” of nonviable fetuses and emryos above the women carrying them. they make up lies they tell themselves, that women are lining up to get abortions, that women use abortion as birth control. In the case of late-term abortion, which is rare and only employed under extremely bad situations for both the mother and the not-so-well developed fetus. I’ll go through some of the conditions Booman lists, so you have an idea of what those situations entail:

>Anencephaly is a cephalic disorder that results from a neural tube defect that occurs when the cephalic (head) end of the neural tube fails to close, usually between the 23rd and 26th day of pregnancy, resulting in the absence of a major portion of the brain, skull, and scalp[1]. Children with this disorder are born without a forebrain, the largest part of the brain consisting mainly of the cerebral hemispheres (which include the isocortex, which is responsible for higher level cognition, i.e., thinking). The remaining brain tissue is often exposed—not covered by bone or skin…

Trisomy 18: The survival rate of Edwards Syndrome is very low. About 95% die in utero. Of liveborn infants, only 50% live to 2 months, and only 5–10% will survive their first year of life. Major causes of death include apnea and heart abnormalities. It is impossible to predict the exact prognosis of an Edwards Syndrome child during pregnancy or the neonatal period. Because major medical interventions are routinely withheld from these children, it is difficult to determine what the survival rate or prognosis would be with aggressive medical treatment.[3] The median life span is five to fifteen days.[4][5] One percent of children born with this syndrome live to age ten, typically in cases of the less severe mosaic Edwards syndrome.[3]

I could go on, but it’s getting depressing. The fact is that pro-life zealots believe women should be forced to give birth to children they don’t want and can’t afford, children who are the result of rape, and children whose physical and mental development is permanently distorted by genetic problems. And while I don’t begrudge people brave and strong enough to raise kids with these conditions the right to have them, no one should be saddled with diseases they are unprepared to treat for the rest of their lives, especially in a country that currently has no such thing as “single payer, national health care.”

I fear I won’t be able to read Christine Flowers’ column this week, as the ghoul will inevitably be dancing joyfully on Tiller’s grave.
