For Philly Cat Lovers: A REAL “Operation Rescue”

Philadelphia, direct action June 1st, 2009

Yesterday afternoon, Christina and I watched one of the latest packs of stray kittens playing around under out forsythia bush. The mama cat was there watching as the kittens scurried away from our giant legs coming up the walk. Such little cuties: all of them were bright orange with pretty blue eyes. The kittens are at that “just able to walk” stage, where they follow their mom everywhere and get into all sorts of trouble.

well, last night there was just that: trouble. About a minute after Christina left for work this morning, I heard the doorbell ringing. Figuring she took my keys by mistake, I hustled down the stairs. It was Christina alright, but it wasn’t my keys she was concerned about. It was a tiny orange kitten, battered and left for dead, on our front porch. “It’s still alive,” she said, “and I can’t take responsibility for it this time. can you make sure it gets some water or something before you leave?”

I looked over at the kitty. “Is it alive?” I asked.

“Yes, it’s breathing,” she said. “But I don’t know how long it’s got, and I’m already running late for work.” Her commute is an hour each way.

I also didn’t have the time to stay home from work, and as I left i saw it was being watched by a brother or sister, which ran away as soon as I stepped out the door. I checked to make sure the little guy was still breathing. He (or she) was still hanging on, so I covered its little body with a blanket and put a bowl of water nearby. Kittens are remarkably resilient (cleaning my deck earlier this summer, I nearly drowned one that was hiding below, and after an hour of pitiful mewling it was on its way again), so it may well survive the attack.

In any event, we already HAVE a cat we adopted in January. It took almost 6 months for my notorious cat allergy to subside, and even though the orange kitty is VERY cute, my system can’t handle another cat. if you’re interested in a real operation rescue, one that doesn’t involve murdering doctors, please email me at bfstemp AT yahoo DOT com. I live in southwest Philly, and in the event that the kitty is still alive, I’ve like to give it a better shot at a long life than it has as a stray.
