And No One Did Anything.
“On arrival at the place of detention in Afghanistan I was stripped naked. I remained
naked for the next two weeks. I was put in a cell measuring approximately 1m x 2m. I was kept in a standing position, feet flat on the floor, but with my arms above my head and fixed with handcuffs and a chain to a metal bar running across the width of the cell. The cell was dark with no light, artificial or natural….After some time of being held in this position my stump began to hurt so I removed my artificial leg to relieve the pain. Of course my one good leg then began to ache and soon started to give way so that I was left hanging with all my weight on my wrists. I shouted for help but at first nobody came. Finally, after about one hour a guard came and my artificial leg was given back to me and I was again placed in the standing position with my hands above my head. After that the interrogators sometimes deliberately removed my artificial leg in order to add extra stress to the position. For the first two
weeks I was held in this position apart for two or three times when I was allowed to lie down, but I cannot remember for how long.

and after they were done taking his leg away for the 3x time he gave up the info that he was withholding…these terrorists are trained to withhold info so they gotta do whatever they can to make them talk…say your son was kidnapped and you had the guy who took him but he wouldnt tell you where your son was being kept, what would you do?

all of these guys were held in solitary confinement from each other, yet all of their stories match, and all have the exact same details.
most importantly, and as I have persistently pointed out, is that none of the “information” went anywhere. it was all wild goose chases, and no plots were foiled. none. that’s not information, that’s “saying anything to get the torture to stop.”

Torture is contagious. Once we cross that line, we get more and more comfortable with it- it’s routine for military investigations, why not allow it for criminal investigations?
Why not cover a suspect’s head with a typewriter cover for a few minutes until he remembers what crime he’s committed?
Or, why not dress as the Easter Bunny and beat a suspect with a neon-green nightstick until they confess? Nobody will believe their story when they go to the judge.
If we do this, we become our nightmares and they win.

Alex wins the kewpie doll for dismantling wingnut logic!
i had to have the same discussion with my dad, who at one time approved of the dershowitz concept of “torture warrants”. After i reminded him that the police would want one for every single case, he realized it was institutionalizing torture.
people look to us because we’re DIFFERENT from dictators and oppressive regimes, not because we’re the same.
