Compost is available at the Fairmount Park Recycling Center weekdays and Saturdays.
The hours kind of suck:
Monday-Friday 7:30AM-3PM
Saturday Hours:
April 4 – November 28
8AM-Noon
Ignore the language about rates; as the first sentence says “City residents are permitted to obtain compost, mulch, wood chips and manure for residential use at no cost. ” Also, this isn’t the “biosolids” (aka “human shit”) that they provide at the Water Revenue Department, but leaf waste, wood chips, lawn clippings, and horse/cow shit.
Happy composting! Use it to grow your own and say “fuck you” to corporate agribusiness!

Thanks, I really had no idea. Of course, this post has generated another question. What exactly would one do with the free “biosolids” that the water department provides?

I believe the biosolids are ok to use for stuff like flowers and other ornamental plants. you just don’t want to be ingesting that shit (literally)!

I think there’s enough compost and dried cow/chicken poop in the world that I won’t ever have to resort to the human kind. I wouldn’t even want that seeping into the ground and getting into groundwater and runoff and stuff. Eww.

My neighbor told me that if I water, weed and tend to his garden, I can take what I need. He’s got some great stuff too! I will have water hose and hoe in hand.
