If we legalized marijuana, we would create an entirely new revenue stream, take pressure off our police and free them to go after real criminals like rapists and murderers, and make room in our prisons for real criminals. And that’s just in the short term. As I’ve mentioned before, a pot bust can ruin an individual’s chance at a better life by prohibiting that person from federal student aid, trapping the pothead in a life of low-wage jobs that don’t even begin to make ends meet, and almost forcing the smoker back into a life of crime. This robs society of productive workers using their skills to maximum effect, which robs us of the revenue that person could be producing through high-paid work, as well as keeping that person’s spending power lower than it need be.
