Let’s talk About Charles Schumer
I’m going to piggyback on Greenwald’s excellent post on the odious Charles Schumer, who indeed “represents nothing other than the rotted ways of Washington… everything that is broken and sleazy about our political system.”
As you may have seen, Schumer is strutting around like the cock of the walk, bragging about how he took out Charles Freeman,/a>, because Freeman was critical of Israel and unafraid of the goons and thugs in AIPAC, the right-wing Israel lobby that gets whatever it wants from the US and wants to control our country’s intelligence assessments.
but let’s talk for a moment, you and I, about Charles Schumer, noted torture supporter…
“hello, Senator Charles Schumer’s office…”
“Hi my name is Brendan Skwire. I’ve been reading a lot about AG Michael Mukasey this week. From what i understand, he told Senator Whitehouse he wasn’t leaning toward investigating allegations of torture, and told Senator Schumer that he wouldn’t support outlawing waterboarding, and told Diuck Durbin that “it’s unresolved” whether waterboarding is torture. Now, given the fact that Senator Schumer wrote a big editorial in the New York Times responding to those of us who were calling and asking him not to confirm Mukasey– after all it was due to Senator Schumer’s leadership and Diane Feinstein’s leadership that he was confirmed– I was wondering if there’s a new editorial pending, perhaps titled “My Bad, America” or maybe “Oopsie Daisey”. Do you know if any such editorials are pending?”
“No sire, to the best of my knowledge, there’s no such editorial planned.”
“Really? Doesn’t Senator Schumer owe the country an explanation? I mean, I can quote that editorial chapter and verse. Schumer said that Mukasey “he personally made clear to me that if the law were in place, the president would have no legal authority to ignore it”, and that “Even without the proposed law in place, Judge Mukasey would be more likely than a caretaker attorney general to find on his own that waterboarding and other techniques are illegal.” He also said, “Judge Mukasey would do much to remove the stench of politics from the Justice Department.” But I think the last week or so have made it pretty clear that Mukasey isn’t going to do anything like what the Senator promised. He’s just a continuation of Alberto Gonzalez. Shouldn’t Senator Schumer want to explain why he was so incredibly wrong? Isn’t an explanation owed to the American people?”
“Umm… uhh. Umm, yeah, those ARE really good questions.”
As the financial crisis jolted the nation in September, Senator Charles E. Schumer was consumed. He traded telephone calls with bankers, then became one of the first officials to promote a Wall Street bailout. He spent hours in closed-door briefings and a weekend helping Congressional leaders nail down details of the $700 billion rescue package.
The next day, Mr. Schumer appeared at a breakfast fund-raiser in Midtown Manhattan for Senate Democrats. Addressing Henry R. Kravis, the buyout billionaire, and about 20 other finance industry executives, he warned that a bailout would be a hard sell on Capitol Hill. Then he offered some reassurance: The businessmen could count on the Democrats to help steer the nation through the financial turmoil.
“We are not going to be a bunch of crazy, anti-business liberals,” one executive said, summarizing Mr. Schumer’s remarks. “We are going to be effective, moderate advocates for sound economic policies, good responsible stewards you can trust.”
The message clearly resonated. The next week, executives at firms represented at the breakfast sent in more than $135,000 in campaign donations.
…and dancing organ-grinder monkey for AIPAC:
Dodd still lies in wait, hoping to filibuster Bolton again, but he does not appear to have the votes this time. AIPAC, the pro-Israel lobby, now backs Bolton, and the usually partisan Democrat Sen. Charles Schumer has indicated he will change his vote from last year and vote for cloture to end debate.
Schumer, as greenwald ably points out, also supported warrantless wiretapping by voting in favor of Michael Hayden for CIA chief, and supports the dismantling of habeas corpus, by his vote for Micahel Mukasey, his good friend who lied to him.
People like Charles Schumer are the equivalent of intestinal parasites: they get into the body, they latch on with their powerful mandibles, and they simply will not let go until someone shits them out.
And that’s what needs to happen with Chuck Schumer: he needs to be shat out. And unfortunately, that’s gonna take a long time and a lot of money. Although a dead girl or a live boy could do the job pretty quickly.
