West Philly, Lend a Hand to Save Your Libraries
From david sternberg at Philyl for Change:
On November 6, Mayor Nutter announced the closing of 11 branches of the Free Library – 20 percent of the system – shutting their doors permanently within the month. On December 4, City Council passed a non-binding resolution asking to delay the closings until they can be evaluated in the context of the full 2009 budget. The mayor plans to go ahead with the permanent closings anyway.
Libraries in our neighborhoods are integral to our city and our future. They are more than just books – they are often the only place thousands of Philadelphians can access jobs and educational resources on the Internet.
They don’t have to be closed and you can help.
Bring your own (charged) phone to Philly for Change Phoning to Save Libraries. Call Philly for Change Members and urge them to call the Mayor and City Council members and tell them to help save the libraries!
