Bob Corker is a Coward
UPDATED BELOW
How do I know?
As regular readers know, I spend a lot of time harrassing calling Senators and Representatives in Congress. Sometimes, I lose all of my minutes by the end of the first week of the month, no joke.
So I’ve got a bit of experience when it comes to calling DC. Like most offices, Senators and reps have the direct to voicemail function when you call. In many offices, like Harry Reid, Barbara Boxer, John Kerry, Joe Lieberman and Nancy Pelosi, you have to dial 1 if you want to speak to an actual living breathing human being. With all of the offices in DC, if the front desk is on the other line, you always go starigjht to voicemail with a message that typically says “Hello, you’ve reached Senator Blowhard. No one’s available to take your call right now, so please leave a message.
The only time the phones actually give a busy signal is when they have been deliberately left off the hook. Charles Schumer’s office does this whenever he’s making an unpopular vote. harry reid’s office simply refuses to answer questions.
So it’s not surprising the big bad Bob “Union Busting” Corker takes the phone off the hook. You would too if your selfishness led to the collapse of the global market, and the closing of 30% of GM’s US plants.
It’s not surprising, because at heart every bully’s a coward.
UPDATE: I finally got through to Senator Hoover’s Corker’s office, and outlined my grievances. As expected, his staff was rude and imperious: i honestly do not know where southerners get their reputation for gentility and manners. Maybe it’s just that I’m speaking with Republicans: most of my friends from the south are Democrats and libertarians, and they’re just as pleasant as a spring day. Especially Claiborne, a sweetheart of a guy. Republicans could take some lessons from him for class and dignity. But I digress.
So I call Corksie’s office and keep referring to him as Senator Hoover, which I think is a fair comparison. I detail my grievances and remark, “It’s no wonder I’ve been getting a busy signal for the past 7 hours. I wouldn’t want to talk to anyone either if–”
Sir, that is not true–
“– if I was responsible for crashing the market, and throwing millions of people out of work, and closing 20% of American GM plants—”
sir that is NOT–
“And could you tell the Senator for me please that the reason those Japanese companies he’s so loyal to at the expense of American worker have lower costs is that the Japanese have national health care like every other civilized country. But corker can’t have that so he’d rather have our parents and grandparents get sick and die than give them health care.”
sir, that’s not true–
“Yes it is. It’s entirely true: GM even says so. So yeah, I figure you’re not having a good day. I’ll bet the only reason you put the phone back on the hook was because it’s the end of the day and people aren’t calling as much.”
Sir, we have been on the phone ALL DAY, she finally shouted and hung up the phone.
Well THAT was rude, so I called back. the same woman’s voice answered the phone. “Hello, Senator Corker’s office.”
“Hi,” I begin, “we seem to have been disconnected. Now, unrelated to my last call, it was my understanding the south was known for its manners and etiquette.”
“Sir, i wasn’t talking to you that was someone else.”
“Really? Oh, well then pass this along to your colleagues. I don’t know what kind of manners your parents teach you down in Tennessee, but up here in the north, we don’t hang up on people without saying something like “goodbye”. that’s just plain rude.”
Rude?? Sir, you were calling us LAZY!
“What? How do you know what i said if you weren’t talking to me? So now you’re a liar as well? where’d you learn that?” It was clearly the same person, and she was getting upset.
No, no it was the person sitting next to me! she just told me–
“Oooooh, so that’s what it is. Except I recognize your voice….”
