Same-Sex Marriage Rights
My brother has an odious little troll at his site, a self-described gay “independent” whose “independent” political views seem to coincide only with those of the right-wing base of the GOP. I like to bust his balls and point out his contradictions, which makes him mad.
On one or two occasions I have stepped over the line to make a point, pointing out the impending success of California’s Proposition 8, which not only banned gay marriage in California, but stripped marriage rights away from those who had previously wed with the blessing of the state. “Ha ha,” I would write to this silly person, “we’ll see how the conservatives you support repay you.” He deserved everything he got from me, the fuckin’ troll.
But one thing that is NOT acceptable is the passage of proposition 8. I have been way too busy ranting about national elections and never got around to condemning this unconstitutional, bigoted, discriminatory new law, which (if not overturned) will have an incredibly powerful negative impact not only for gay people (who like every other american deserve the right to marry the consenting adult of their choice) but on all domestic partnerships.
I take this opportunity to link to Glenn Greenwald (again), who today wrote so eloquently about this issue, and promises Obama and Biden have made to the gay community (Ray’s troll take note: Obama would codify your rights, that are currently being denied to you, into law, where McCain would perpetuate this disgusting and hateful injustice against gay people).
People of good will, who have a sense of equal rights and justice, need to pressure Obama and the Democrats to do right by our gay, lesbian, and transgender friends, family members, and neighbors.
