Pit Bull Hockey Mom Hides Behind 7-Year Old.

I don’t know who told Sarah Palin she’d do well in Philadephia, but this is what happens when an unpopular, polarizing, corrupt vice-presidential candidate comes to the Fliers opening game and drops the first puck:

When Sarah Palin dropped the ceremonial first puck at the Flyers’ opener on Saturday night at the Wachovia Center, she was greeted by resounding (almost deafening) boos. Ed Snider, owner of the Flyers, had her introduced to the crowd more as a hockey mom than as the Republican candidate for vice president. She was flanked by Scott Gomez, the Rangers center, and Mike Richards, the Flyers center.

While Philadelphia fans are known for not being shy about voicing disapproval, the question has been raised — including by me in an earlier version of this post — whether the appearance was appropriate at a sports event like this.

“The question has been raised whether the appearance was appropriate”? Hell no it wasn’t appropriate: we spent a good part oft he evening listening to Philadelphia’s WIP 610 Sports Talk station: the calls pre-game that we heard were 100% against the appearance. While Fliers owner Ed Snider may be a committed Republican, he doesn’t speak for the fans who, if the calls we heard reflected the views of the average hockey fan, don’t want politics mixed with their sports.

This disaster was predictable, but perhaps the most puerile comment is from Governor Palin herself:

A carpet was laid down and Palin, dressed in a beige trench, walked on to the ice joined by her daughters Willow and Piper. The GOP Vice-Presidential nominee said at an earlier fundraiser that she would stop some of the booing from the rowdy Philadelphia fans by putting her seven year old daughter, Piper in a Flyers jersey. She said, “How dare they boo Piper!”

Governor Palin? They weren’t booing your daughter: they were booing YOU. I thought you were the pitbull with lipstick: why are you hiding behind a 7 year old?

I don’t know why the McKKKain campaign thought this appearance would fly in Philadelphia, which is ot only an overwhelmingly Democratic town, but a city that is WELL-KNOW for vocally expressing our dissatisfaction. We’re the town that booed Santa Claus, and then hurled snowballs at the poor SOB.. Sarah Palin should consider herself lucky she wasn’t beaned by a puck or a pretzel. Ed Snider on the other hand should just be ashamed of himself.

..Adding that Sarah Palin should be ashamed of herself too. What kind of person uses their young child as a shield against boos and jeers? Was Palin’s appearance last night in any way healthy for her daughters’ self-esteem and emotional well-being? Is it healthy for a young child to face 54,000 angry hockey fans to withstand screams and catcalls aimed at her mother? Is it good for a child to learn that her mother is despised and loathed by a huge portion of the country? What kind of parent, knowing Philadelphia’s propensity for pelting pariahs with garbage, old food, beer showers, and blunt objects, puts their child in harm’s way? Are those what the GOP calls “family values”, or is that closer to what we call “child abuse”?

Disgusting.
