An Open Letter to John McCain

Dear Senator McCain:

It’s been quite a week for you: your vice-presidential candidate is getting called out by the likes of Campbell Brown, after which she came off like a total idiot in an interview with total idiot Katie Couric, your own staff says she’s unprepared for the VP debates, you’re trying to duck the debates yourself (and you just flip-flopped on that), you injected yourself into the bailout negotiations (even though you admit the economy is not your strong suit) to horrifyingly bad results (including your new ownership of the crisis), you’ve angered the press (aka, your base), David Letterman’s beaten the shit out of you on national television for a second day in a row, and even more questions are coming out about your health. Meanwhile, the economy is cratering and you may take the blame.

My friend, I propose that you go farther than suspending your campaign. You have made a fool out of yourself and it is only going to get worse. It is time to quit. Tonight’s debate is going to be a disaster for you whether you show up or not. Cede the election now and save America more pain, confusion, and anxiety. We know Sarah Palin’s out of her league. We suspect you’re going to die in office, if not on the campaign trail. You’re 72 years old, and clearly not well. As the old man once said, “Fame or integrity: which is more important? Money or happiness: which is more valuable? Success or failure: which is more destructive?”

Mr. McCain, you have given a lot to America, more than most of us. And think about what you’ll be taking on in what should be your golden years: a totally destroyed economy, which you’ll have to raise taxes to fix; a war without end in Iraq; the end of American predominance. You know what I think? I think it is time to give YOURSELF a break. Go on that world tour with Cindy. Take a cruise. Treat the family, all of them, to a long vacation on some exotic isle in the Caribbean or the South Pacific.

Ten years ago, you might have been a credible candidate. Hell even a year ago you were credible. But now? I’d say “quit now while you’re ahead”, but your credibility is destroyed, your reputation’s taking a hit, and rather than appearing as an elder statesman, you are rapidly becoming a parody of yourself. Save yourself, John McCain, and save your soul.

For the good of the country, for the good of yourself and what future remains for you, it is time to step down and cede the election to Barack Obama.

And hey, if anything goes wrong you still get to point the finger and cast blame. That’s gotta count for something, right?

The time has come, Senator McCain. The time has come today. Step down, end your campaign, and end this madness.

Sincerely,

Brendan Skwire
