Palin and Planned Parenthood
As I’ve pointed out, one of the reasons Sarah Palin forced the rape victims of her little town of Wasilla to pay for their rape kits (a $1200.00 expense) probably has to do with her opposition to abortion and her almost certain belief that certain forms of contraception are the same thing as abortion.
If this offends you as much as it offends me, I have the prank for you (suggested by commenter Kate (not your sister) and again by my pal Beth). Make a gift to Planned Parenthood in Sarah Palin’s name. Here’s Beth:
Since Sarah Palin gave her speech accepting the Republican nomination for the Vice Presidency, Barack Obama’s campaign has raised over $10 million. Some of you may already be supporting the Obama campaign, others of you may still be recovering from the primaries. None of you, however, can be happy with the Palin selection, especially with respect to her positions on women’s issues and reproductive rights. So, may I suggest the following fiendishly brilliant alternative? Make a donation to Planned Parenthood. In Sarah Palin’s name. (A Planned Parenthood donation is tax deductible by the way.)
And here’s the best part: when you make a donation to PP in her name, they’ll send her a card telling her that the donation has been made in her honor. Plus, PP is a fantastic organization that can certainly use our support.
Beth suggests: “go to donate, then honorary gifts”
Or you should be able to get to the honorary donation page directly through this link.
You’ll need to fill in an address to let PP know where to send the “in Sarah Palin’s honor” card. Beth suggests you use the address listed on McCain’s campaign wesbite:
John McCain 2008
PO Box 16118
Arlington, VA 22215
Kate adds this one:
McCain 2008
1235 S. Clark Street
1st Floor
Arlington, VA 22202
Planned Parenthood provides vital services beyond abortion, including family planning, reproductive health services, contraception education, AIDS and HIV services, prenatal care, and emergency contraception. They are continually harassed by lunatics like John McKKKain and Sarah Palin. Planned Parenthood is always short on cash, and unlike NARAL, they actually DO something productive with your money.
So give to Planned Parenthood and piss off Palin.

It probably doesn’t have to do with emergency contraception, actually, despite what John Aravosis thinks. Palin was Mayor starting in 1996 to 2002. Plan B, the main oral emergency contraceptive, wasn’t even approved for use until 1999. Before that, there was no approved EC, just off-label use of high doses of contraceptives.
In addition, rape kits and EC are associated in people’s minds because they’re often used by the same hospital workers, but the kits themselves are just evidence collection tools. A friend of mine who is an expert on this doesn’t believe the EC-is-abortion angle on Palin.
Getting our facts wrong on this runs the risk that the right wing will be able to cover up the whole thing. Let’s be careful to get it right. It bad enough that she charged rape victims to collect evidence? I’d say that’s pretty fucking bad.
