A Little Levity

comics July 9th, 2008

I don’t think anyone who reads this blog doubts that my head is exploding over FISA. So instead of ranting, I have to take a quick break for some random hilarity.

I don’t read the comic strip “Curtis” all that much, but today’s strip is hysterical. Curtis, for those of you who don’t read the funnies, is a young black kid, about 11, who’s a precocious wise-ass. The strip’s actually pretty funny, especially the character of Curtis’s long-suffering Dad. I read it the way I used to watch “M.A.S.H.” when I was a kid: I never sought it out, but anytime I tuned in, I ended up laughing hysterically.

Today’s Curtis is particularly awesome. The backstory is that our protagonist is in summer school because he failed math.

OK, this is hilarious for SO many reasons, the least of which is that in panel 2, Curtis is staring directly at his zaftig teacher’s enormous breasts and in panel 3, he can’t keep his eyes off her butt.

No what gets me is that the eleven year old boy is saying “Hamina Hamina”, Ralph Kramden’s catchphrase from the classic “The Honeymooners”. he’s ELEVEN. He’s never even SEEN “The Honeymooners”, and even if he had, he wouldn’t be channeling Jackie Gleason.

I also love the utterly terrified, yet put-upon look Curtis has in the first panel, but that’s an entirely different essay that I don’t have time for right now.
