Chris Carney: Putting on the Kneepads for AT&T
Chris Carney was elected with the help of Pennsylvania progressives as well as the national group, Blue America. Immediately after his election, Carney admitted he’d lied to the organization: in particular, he never had any intention of supporting Hate Crime legislation.
Since then Carney has proven to be a real asshole, but his worst issue is telecom immunity. Even though AT&T, Comcast, Verizon, and several other telephone carriers broke the law by helping the Bush administration spy on Americans, Carney thinks they deserve retroactive immunity for their crimes. In other words, Carney wants to make sure that Americans never get their day in court against some of the most powerful corporations in the world. hey here’s a question: if they’re innocent of criminal wrongdoing, why do they need immunity? And since when is it Congress’s job to determine whether a crime has been committed or not?
