Mission Accomplished! Law Day! May Day!

Today is the 5th Anniversary of Mission Accomplished Day.

Sure wish someone would tell me why the troops are still there if the Mission’s been Accomplished. What IS the mission now anyway?

Maybe this little girl knows.

Or maybe this little guy does.

And that’s not mentioning the 4,000 soldiers who came home in body bags that the Pentagon won’t let you see, or the hundreds of thousand who’ve come home missing their faces, their limbs, and their sanity.

I’ll be calling my senator, Arlen Specter in a few moments. Arlen voted for the war, approved every funding request to continues the war, and voted against every proposed timetable and every effort at oversight. He’s also published a book detailing his fight against cancer: I’ll be asking how much of the profits go to help the soldiers who’ve come home tumor-ridden thanks to their exposure to depleted uranium. Considering that the Walter Reed scandal happened under Arlen’s watch, and Arlen professed ignorance of the entire matter, I’m guessing that amount is “ZERO” but hey, let’s find out.

It is also, according to the President, “Law Day”. Try not to laugh:

The American legal system is central to protecting the rights and freedoms our Nation holds dear. The theme of this year’s Law Day, “The Rule of Law: Foundation for Communities of Opportunity and Equity,” recognizes the fundamental role that the rule of law plays in preserving liberty in our Nation and in all free societies. We pay tribute to the men and women in America’s legal community. Through hard work and dedication to the rule of law, members of the judiciary and the legal profession help secure the rights of individuals, bring justice to our communities, and reinforce the proud traditions that make America a beacon of light for the world.

I’d like to highlight some members of “legal profession” who “help secure the rights of individuals, bring justice to our communities, and reinforce the proud traditions that make America a beacon of light for the world”:

abugonzo
Alberto Gonzalez, who helped purge the Justice Department of attorneys who didn’t toe the BushCo line

yoo
John Yoo, who wrote after-the-fact memos to help BushCo torture detainees, breaking several of our laws

mukasey
AG Michael Mukasey, who refuses to investigate torture allegations

There are so many heroes I could mention: Lurita Doan, Rachel Paulose, Scooter Libby… the list goes on, a real Chamber of Horrors.

Of course, it’s really May Day, which celebrates the Labor Movement, so you can see why the Administration might want to downplay that. After all, when the workers rise up, unpleasant things have a way of happening, so it’s best to discourage that kind of behavior or ignore it all together.
