Bringing the Dogs to Heel
Via Firedoglake and Glenn Greenwald, if you have a buck or two to spare, consider funding a targeted robocall and ad against a Blue Dog, also known as a Bush Dog, Democrat. What’s a Bush Dog?
Although Open Left coined the term, Greenwald actually puts it best:
Yesterday, there was some celebration over the fact that Arkansas Sen. Mark Pryor will be re-elected without opposition this year. That’s the same Mark Pryor who voted for the Military Commissions Act, for the Protect America Act, for telecom immunity, against every Iraq redeployment measure, and scores of other similar votes. The fact that he’s being re-elected with no opposition demonstrates his extremely strong political standing, i.e., that he cast these votes because they reflect what he believes. What’s to celebrate about the fact that someone like that — with that belief system — is returning to the Senate?
Democrats are never going to change their behavior if there continues to be no price for what they’re doing…
The only real prospect for changing any of that is to attach a political price, some form of meaningful punishment, when they do things such as vote to abolish habeas corpus or to vest new warrantless eavesdropping powers in the President or to grant amnesty to telecoms. That needs to be done even if it means weakening the bad Democrat in question.
Greenwald goes on to describe a similar campaign that targeted five Blue Dog/Bush Dogs who sided with the Republicans to oppose S-CHIP expansion. The funds raised, completely on-line, flipped all but one to supporting the bill.
The present campaign hasn’t even been running for 24 hours, and at this writing nearly $39,000 has been raised.
Over at FDL they’re having a poll for which Blue Dog/Bush Dog to target: the contest is called “Get Even for FISA”.
Here in Pennsylvania we have the particularly odious Chris Carney, who deliberately misrepresented his political views to online progressive activists in order to get their financial backing, and then promptly turned his back on every single promise, so I’ve cast my vote and thrown in $10.00. It’s no surprise [now] that he’s supporting retroactive immunity, and combined with his views on gays and the war, he’s a real piece of work.
The Blue Dogs and Bush Dogs need to be brought to heel. I’m tired of watching them piss all over the Constitution like it was a fire hydrant, and I’m tired of them shitting all over the future of this country. If you have a buck or two to spare, help punish a Blue Dog.
