fc perspective

Every since Bil Keane started handing over the reins to Family Circus to his eldest son, I’ve enjoyed playing an occasional game called “Jeff or Bil” in which you guess who wrote the strip of the day. In this case there’s no question of Bil’s authorship.

Never mind the pabulum gagline. Just marvel at Bil Keane’s utterly insane sense of perspective, which has come to mark his long career. Honestly, it’s one of the best features of the long-running strip. The yard to Jeffy’s left actually looks more like a painted studio backdrop than anything three-dimensional. The relationship between the sizes of the tree, the car, Jeffy, and Mommy is a wonder to behold. Little Jeffy has to duck to enter the garage, and probably can’t even fit in the car. As for Mommy, she’ll have to have her face between her knees to drive that thing!
