Sunday AM Homebrew Blog
As usual, I missed the Saturday homebrew blogs at daily Kos and Balloon Juice, but it’s because I was busy brewing so I guess I have an excuse.
Yesterday afternoon’s brew is titled “Thanksgiving Ale #2″, a pale ale to balance “Thanksgiving Ale #1″, a dark strong ale. I used 6.6 pounds of Northwestern Gold extract, and 3.3 pounds of Northwestern Extra Light. The grain bill included 1/2 a pound of melanoid malt, which contributes a strong malt aroma, and 1/2 a pound of crystal malt, which will give the brew a nice amber color. We used 2 ounces of Cluster at the beginnign of the bloil (1 hour) for the bittering hops, and 2 ounces of Mt. Rainier for the aroma hops, at a rate one ounce at 15 minutes, and another ounce at 5 minutes.
I was worried that we didn’t have enough yeast leftover from Chritmas Ale #2, brewed last Saturday, and further worried that after sitting in the fridge for a week, the yeast would be dead. I was therefore delighted to walk downstairs this morning and hear the beer bub-bub-bubbling away in the fermenter. With a little luck, we’ll be able to transfer as early as Wednesday, which could mean two kegs for Thanksgiving.
