Anne vs. Vince

Philadelphia, politics October 30th, 2007

As I remarked in the Anne Dicker’s website couldn’t differ more drastically from Vince “139 Indictments” Fumo.

Dicker:

Anne believes that it is time for Philadelphia to turn its attention and energy toward Harrisburg. As the next Senator to represent the First District, she will clearly be a strong voice for change. She is uniquely qualified to break from the old idea of self service over public service and restore a culture of open, honest, fair and ethical hard work for the benefit of all neighbors and communities in the First District.
The Issues

* PUBLIC SAFETY – The Commonwealth must empower the City of Philadelphia in an effort to stem the tide of violence by passing reform legislation regarding the purchase, possession and use of handguns.
* PUBLIC EDUCATION – The Commonwealth must fully fund and support its constitutional mandate to provide high quality education for all Philadelphians, from pre-K to adulthood.
* NEIGHBORHOOD ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT – The Commonwealth must support and encourage smart, sustainable neighborhood-friendly development that not only provides family sustaining jobs, but also protects and preserves the character and value of Philadelphia’s diverse neighborhoods.

I think we have a good idea of what Anne Dicker will do if she’s elected.

And here’s Vince Fumo:

FUMO RECOVERING AFTER BACK SURGERY
Press Release:
PHILADELPHIA, October 2 – State Senator Vince Fumo (D-Philadelphia) underwent lumbar laminectomy surgery this morning to correct spinal stenosis, which had been causing pain in his back and right leg.
The procedure, performed at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia by Dr. William Welch, lasted about one hour and fifteen minutes. Dr. Frederick Simeone was in attendance as consulting neurosurgeon. Doctor Welch removed arthritic bone that had been compressing nerves and producing pain that prevented Fumo from standing or walking for long periods of time. The surgery went as anticipated.
As of late morning, Fumo, 64, was awake and in a recovery room. He is expected to transfer this afternoon to a regular room at Pennsylvania Hospital, where he will remain for one or two nights. He will be restricted from traveling for several weeks.

Lumbar problems are really taking up a lot of the Senator’s time, because he mentions it twice.

FUMO TO UNDERGO BACK SURGERY ON TUESDAY
Press Release:
PHILADELPHIA, SEPTEMBER 27, 2007 – State Senator Vince Fumo (D-Philadelphia) will undergo a back operation on Tuesday morning, October 2, at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. William Welch will perform the surgery, with Dr. Frederick Simeone on hand as consulting neurosurgeon.
The procedure, a lumbar laminectomy, will remove arthritic bone that is compressing nerves to Fumo’s legs. The localized arthritis has caused back pain that radiates down the right leg, limiting Fumo’s ability to walk or stand for long periods of time.
Fumo, 64, will probably remain in the hospital one or two nights. His travel will be restricted for two to four weeks.

Followed by a retrospectively unfortunate reminder about tax rebates.

Instead of discussing his ideas and vision for his personal fiefdom the City of Philadelphia, Senator Fumo uses his niche on the net to complain about his aching back. Is that REALLY the best use of the Senator’s website, which in all likelihood is paid for by Pennsylvanians’ taxes? And do Pennsylvanians really care that much about the Senator’s lumbar laminectomy

The lumbar laminectomy (open decompression) differs from a microdiscectomy in that the incision is longer and there is more muscle stripping.

*First, the back is approached through a two-inch to five-inch long incision in the midline of the back and the left and right back muscles (erector spinae) are dissected off the lamina on both sides and at multiple levels (see Figure 2).
*After the spine is approached, the lamina is removed (laminectomy) which allows visualization of the nerve roots.
*The facet joints, which are directly over the nerve roots, may then be undercut (trimmed) to give the nerve roots more room.

Anne Dicker for Senate. Not only is she a progressive, she doesn’t use her website to make you think about frightening surgical procedures. Philadelphia needs new blood and Grandpa Fumo ain’t it.
