Porter Wagoner: 1927-2007

country music, obituary, youtube October 29th, 2007

Porter Wagoner, country music legend, died today of lung cancer.

I’ve been a huge fan of Porter Wagoner for years: he was known especially for his garish nudie suits (Wagoner probably kept the rhinestone industry around an extra 50 years on his own), and more importantly for giving Dolly Parton her start. He was a giant, and by most accounts a throughly nice person with a great sense of humor. He let Borat interview him for pete’s sake!

Anyway, here’s some old video of Porter when he was young, wearing a remarkably restrained outfit, and singing the classic “Misery Loves Company”.

And here he is sometime in the 1970s (1980s?): dig that suit!

More later… much more. I think it’s gonna be all Porter all day today. Wait til I get to his psychedelic album.

Wait one more: Porter’s appearance on Letterman:

I was never a big fan of his. But I absolutely fell in love with that chick singer he had with him for a while. She had a voice like clear crystal. I could listen to her forever. What the heck happened to that singer? She was great.
