Drinking Liberally, 10/16: SCHIP Edition
Drinking Liberally in Philadelphia! Always good times and great oldies at the Tangier Bar, 18th and Lombard, every Tuesday from 6 PM to whenever. Free wings for early birds and drink specials!
By now I’m sure everyone’s heard about the S-CHIP veto: President Compassion decided he was going to veto an expansion of the popular and largely successful State Children’s Health Insurance program, and instead offer a budget so meager that many kids already enrolled would be dropped. The veto looks like it will die in the Senate, but in the House a few GOP head-cases and a small number of Bush Dog Democrats ensure the veto may well be sustained. (h/t Open Left)
Thanks to the efforts of the Firedoglake blog, as well as Howie Klein’s Blue America Act Blue, Digby’s Hullabaloo, and Open Left, and many more, ads and robocalls are putting the shame to these four… well, there’s not a word strong enough for someone who would deliberately deny health insurance to children:
Democrats selling out sick children and struggling families:
Jim Marshall (GA)
Gene Taylor (MS)
Bob Etheridge (NC)
Mike McIntyre (NC)
Here in Pennsylvania, we have Republicans like John Peterson (202-225-5121), Bill Shuster (202.225.2431), and Joe Pitts (202-225-2411) who want to deny health insurance to poor and middle class children. What lucky ducks we are that they don’t represent Philadelphia, and how unlucky that their votes, if unchanged, will negatively affect our kids.
The vote is Thursday. See you all tomorrow!
PS: Blue America’s ad has already changed Bush Dog Baron Hill’s mind: he will support SCHIP. Pressure works wonders.
