If Anyone has Glenn Greenwald’s Mailing Address, I Owe Him a Kewpie Doll

bell ring

Glenn Greenwald just took the giant sledge hammer, and DING DING DING went the bell.

For the past several months, Congress’ approval ratings have been as low as, and often lower than, George Bush’s unprecedentedly low ratings. Various media pundits and right-wing advocates use this fact constantly to insinuate that Bush is not uniquely unpopular and Americans have not really turned against Republicans, but rather, there is just a generic dissatisfaction with our political institutions, or more misleadingly still, that Americans are actually angry at Congress for not “doing enough” (by which it is meant that they are excessively investigating and obstructing and not “cooperating” enough).

But the reason for these low approval ratings is as clear as it is meaningful — the overall ratings for Congress are so low because Democrats disapprove of the Democratic Congress almost as much as Republicans do. There is nothing unusual about how Republicans or independents rate the Democratic Congress; the only aspect of any of this that is unusual is that Democrats rate the Congress so low even though it is controlled by their own party. Virtually every poll demonstrates this.

This is absolutely true. That Drinking Liberally announcement? That’s a bulletin that goes out to about 750 people every Monday, many of who are members of other grassroots political organizations like Philly for Change, Young Philly Politics, Neighborhood Networks. I have never received one critical or negative comment about these bulletins, and occasionally get praised for my bile.

Unfortunately, my senator, Bobby Casey, has voted to support both the FISA expansion and the blank check, so I make a point of calling his DC and local offices within 24 hours of sending out the bulletin to let him know what I just mailed to 750 highly active, highly partisan, highly involved progressives.

If we’re going to end the war, bring the Bush Administration to justice, and restore our national honor and reputation, those Democrats who cavil before power have to be brought to heel. No one should ever forget that Congress serves the public: they are our employees, and like all employees they should fear, and bow to, the demands of the management.

There’s nothing in the Constitution that says that those who have more money get a bigger say, and when the servants treat the corporations with more respect than they treat ordinary citizens, they are falling down on the job and deserve to be fired.

The aristocracy can afford to hire their own servants. The two houses of Congress, and indeed the Executive Branch and the Judiciary, are our servants. The Republicans forgot this a long time ago: the Democrats need to stop betraying their promise to restore the proper balance.

Congress’s approval rating is low because the Democrats aren’t doing what they were elected to do.
They’d better watch out when dealing with the boss: eventually, the people will have their say.

And now here’s some live 7 Seconds from the 1980s.
