Hope 2

life, meta August 9th, 2007

Adding to my point about my lack of hope and faith, I’m reminded of a quote by Alan Watts, which I’ll paraphrase here:

Hope is that which allows you to put off indefinitely what you should be doing today.

I do not hope, for example, that global warming will be solved tomorrow. It will NOT be solved tomorrow because everyone else is hoping someone else will do it for them. Global warming needs to be stopped NOW so I do what I can to conserve and to generate less carbon.

I am not hopeful that the Democrats will repeal the FISA law they passed tomorrow. I want them to do it TODAY, and so I call and complain everyday and tell them to do their job NOW.

Al Gore is NOT about hope: “An Inconvenient Truth” is about NOW. Michael Moore is NOT about hope: his movies are about NOW. That’s why both of these men are so hated by the corporations, which thrive on exploiting hopes and dreams.

I’m not hoping for some beautiful day when Jesus H. Christ appears again out of the clouds to take me away to Heaven. I live here NOW. My taxes won’t help me when I’m dead, and I want them to be spent in the interest of making THIS place, where I am NOW and will be for the FORESEEABLE FUTURE (knock wood), a NICE PLACE NOW.

As in TODAY.
Because people are, generally speaking, lazy, stupid, self-centered, and easily led by powerful interests, they don’t DO the things they need to do TODAY. When nothing gets done, nothing changes. When nothing changes, nothing happens.

What is “humanity”?
Humanity is a “something”.

What is the opposite of “something”?
Nothing. And if we continue to DO nothing, we will BECOME nothing. Nothing most assuredly WILL happen.
