Wind Gap, 8/3/07

I played at the Wind Gap Bluegrass Festival this past weekend with the Mill Creek Boys, who hired me as a sub bass player and then let me know I’m full-time. Thankfully, that’s not a huge responsibility as we never practice.

Unfortunately, that really showed during our first set, which was rougher than a fifty-grit condom. The second set was a lot better, but was played to a sparse audience. The festival was hit by a short-lived but massive thunderstorm that not only knocked down a tree, but resulted in two people struck by lightning, including a guy who got zapped when the bolt jumped from his camper’s metal canopy to his prosthetic arm. Another camper told me that ball lightning had set down at his site, right on the beer cooler.

By the time we got on stage for set two, the rain had stopped. I was going to change into stage attire (sigh… the Mill Creek Boys go for that super-cheesy Seldom Scene Hawaiian shirt theme), but Michele, the banjo player and my favorite Mill Creek Boy (er, Girl), told me to wear the raincoat because I looked like the Gorton’s Fisherman.

I have a couple of festivals left this year (as an audience member, not a band member). Next up is Pickin’ in the Pasture, where I hope to hit a few wineries with Christina and blogbuddy Salty Miss Jill, whose blog you should visit because she’s super smart and fun too (Sam’s coming too. He probably won’t be drinking much wine). After PIP, we’re hitting one of the best bluegrass festivals in the US, the Delaware valley Bluegrass Festival.
