Sam Goes To OATS

This weekend, Sam came to the Out Among the Stars Festival in Benton, PA. This is my new favorite festival, surpassing Woodstown, NJ: the grounds are bordered by a beautiful little creek where you can go swimming and an airstrip, where prop planes take off and land throughout the day. The festival grounds are large enough that you can get away from the main event, and small enough that you never lose sight of the stage. There’s a lot of shade, which is great when the July sun is beating down on you. The vendors are very friendly, and there is a LOT of stuff for little kids, especially those who don’t have that much of an attention span for bluegrass, to do. Note to Archie: we still love Woodstown, and wouldn’t miss it for the world, but that creek puts OATS over the top.

There were so many good bands this year. The Cherryholmes Family gets better every year, and this fest was no exception. They were so good, I bought a CD, which is something I never do. The show they put on is just powerful: all the kids are multi-instrumentalists, including the 14-year old fiddle player. Three of the kids write songs, as do mom and dad. Incredible. Buy their cd. See the band.

Another band that knocked my socks off was The Bluegrass Brothers. Led by Victor Dowdy (leading a bg band on bass, which is pretty damn unheard of), the BG Brothers are another family band, with Victor’s brother on banjo, and his two kids on guitar, and just about the hardest driving bluegrass I have ever heard. Ripping fast, and they just didn’t stop.

One of the guys from the Gibson Brothers told me a filthy joke. I’ll repeat it later.

But anyway, this post is all about Sam photos, so here we go in no particular order. There are a couple of me interspersed, and if you’ve ever doubted that human beings really DID arise from gorillas, chimpanzees, and other lower primates, this should quell any lingering questions.

Like I said, we come from simians. Only an idiot questions that fact.

My kid is cuter than your kid.

Meanwhile, I spent the weekend with a mohawk, thanks the Marcera’s clippers

dadmohawk2
Yeah, a mohawk. I haven’t had one since I was 14. I like how the flags in the background give me that “Everyone’s All-American” look. As if.

samoats7
Ooo ooo, aaah ahhh! Banana! banana! Sam is wearing rubber boots because leather sandals and water don’t mix.

samoats8
Sam is wearing his grouchy face because he was feeling shy with the other kids on the nature hike.

samoats9
Then, a little girl shared her leaves with him and he felt better.

He’s not grouchy, he’s just concentrating on his hot dog

Kids love enormous balls. Keep your dirty comments to yourself.
