Leon Blackwell

Philadelphia, death, violence April 20th, 2007

More on the young man who was murdered outside my window:

Leon Blackwell’s family moved to Williamsport in 1998 to get away from the dangers of Philadelphia. They moved back a year and a half ago to be with an ill family member.

The return proved fatal for the 19-year-old Blackwell.

Last week, as he sat on an outdoor bench with two friends at the Kingsessing Recreation Center in Southwest Philadelphia, a 16-year-old walked up to him and fired four shots from a handgun. It was 4:30 in the afternoon.

Two bullets struck Blackwell’s head. A third pierced his neck. He died Saturday, two days after the attack, at the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania. He was buried Tuesday.

Police have obtained an arrest warrant for Recco Ford, 16. Detectives say he may have committed the murder because he believed Blackwell stole some marijuana from him. Ford remains at large.

Killadelphia.
