Hey folks,
I’ll be posting at Firedoglake today at 4:15 EST (yeah, yeah, i know it’s 4:08 as I type this). I wrote a piece on public transportation, and I hope to see you in the comments section. Discussion is always lively!

Timely post…We had to head up to Manhattan Friday evening for a 7:00 birthday party dinner.
Before the weather even became a factor, I was leaning towards SEPTA/NJ Transit, as our last few drives into Manhattan have been horrible. (It tooks us an hour to get OUT of the city last Sunday night! Crazy)
When the weather became a factor, I knew it was the way to go. By the time I had to drive from downtown just to Bridesburg at 3:00 PM, the roads and especially the drivers had really gotten bad.
When you add in gas and tolls, the SEPTA/NJ Transit option isn’t really a big difference in cost (and you have to pay to park in the city, it’s certainly cheaper)
Regarding SEPTA, especially the city services, I remain highly disappointed in the service for the cost here in Philadelphia.
SEPTA needs to embrace new technologies, like NYC’s MetroCard system and free transfers. (Unfortunately, I think the unions are unwilling to lose jobs to automated technology.)
They need to think about rail connections like NJ Transits Metropark, where riders can access NJ Transit and AMTRAK without having to go to the ‘big city station.’ The obvious choice would be the Cornwells heights park and ride, but that was entirely and solely designed for commuters heading into center city from points north and west of that station. They is even anyway to access the park and ride lot from I-95 northbound. I guess anyone down here might not ever want to go to Trenton or NYC!
