Brett Tolman and Kyle Sampson
This is Brett Tolman, who at the request of the Department of Justice, slipped in the language that allowed the purge to go forward. Brett worked with Arlen Specter’s Chief Counsel Michael O’Neill to put the language in (of which Specter claims innoncence, but still hasn’t fired the counsel who went behidn his back). Brett’s competition for the position was Rove protoge, and the guy who masterminded and implemented the purge, was Kyle Sampson.
So Sampson writes the language, Tolman slips it in, Tolman gets appointed US attorney for Utah a few months later.
The whole thing, from start to finish, and whatever version of this story you believe, casts Arlen Specter in an extremely unflattering light: either he knew what was going on, and is playing rehtorical games with the nation, or he’s a dunce who didn’t know what was going on in his own office (not to mention he’s a lousy tipper, as Booman reminded me)

Gotta love the ‘LETS ROLL’ sticker behind him; I missed that the first time around.
I love these macho Republicans acting like they have the biggest johnsons around, meanwhile they sneak provisions into law. If you had real balls, you’d have been upfront handling this ‘request’ from DoJ.
