Republican Consistency

Well, you have to hand to hand it to the Republicans.

They didn’t want a debate when they STARTED their glorious war, bashing anyone who questioned their premises over the head with accusations of “Freedom-hater”, “America-hater”, and “Bush-hater”.

Now that their premises have been exposed as a pack of lies, they don’t want to talk about the war AT ALL, even as their president shoves more young Americans into the meat-grinder.

That’s right: the party of personal responsibility doesn’t want to take any responsibility for their war. That’s been true since day one of this ill-fated Republican Adventure: they’ve kept all funding requests off the US Budget, essentially foisting the cost of the war on YOUR kids (not mine: he’s a Canadian).

And let’s not forget that as the GOP refuses to talk about the mess they’ve made in the Middle East, including putting precious oil resources in even greater jeopardy, fanning the flames of a regional war with Iran, and ignoring Afghanistan to the extent that the Taliban are resurgent, they made some pretty rosy predictions. Like saying our troops would be met with roses and candy, as liberators. That oil revenues would pay for reconstruction. That there was no history of sectarian strife in Iraq. And so on and so on.

Let’s review: it wasn’t OK in 2003 to debate or question the rationales for the war. Now that it’s 2007 and the war isn’t going so hot, it’s not OK to debate or question how we’re going to get out. What IS OK is to send more young men and women to die in the name of freedom, and in the cause of a sectarian civil war we don’t even understand.

Why? So far as I can tell, it’s so that the Republican Party, that bastion of responsibility and moral values doesn’t have to admit it screwed up royally.

Great policy guys! That’ll make for some totally awesome speeches as you seek the Presidency and congressional re-election.

McCain: Don’t Ask Why, Just Send the Kids to Die.

Hagel: Courage in Viet Nam. Cowardice in Congress.

Arlen Specter for Congress: Because Who Gives a Rat’s Ass What You Think?
