The Dwarves: We Must Have Blood
After a last-minute cancellation last month (god only knows what happened THIS time), The Dwarves finally made it to Philadelphia to a little punk rock room on Delaware Avenue called the Barbary. You had to know in advance about the show, because the Barbary doesn’t advertise.
It was a really big bill: I saw the very end of Philadelphia’s Sacreho, saw 5 minutes of the next two bands and then caught the Turbo A.C.s, who were awesome after they dealt with some technical difficulties.
The Dwarves hit like a fucking tornado. Blag Dahlia, who is a really big guy, was all over the room, jumping from the bar into a maelstrom of flying bodies. The last time I saw a show where the whole room was going totally nuts was either Slayer or the Bad Brains. And by “the whole room” I mean there wasn’t a place you could stand where people weren’t slamming. I was getting thrown all over the place. That’s when Dahlia starting inciting a riot from the stage. “C’mon, let’s get a riot going, let’s riot out into the street!” Or something to that effect: in any event, a large group to my right began beating the shit out of each other, and rolled right on out, yes, into the street.
I don’t remember all the songs: the only album I own is The Dwarves Are Young and Good Looking, but they did quite a bit from that particular slab of vinyl: I Will Deny, Unrepentant, Everybody’s Girl, and of course the featured video above, “We Must Have Blood.”
Dwarves, baby: rock-n-fuckin’-roll.
