NARAL Wants to Know

Why, look who’s crawled out from under her rock!
It’s Nancy Keenan, come to tell me that Pennsylvania gets an F when it comes to reproductive rights.

You know who else gets an F? Nancy Keenan.

It was Nancy Keenan who failed to use NARAL’s pile of money stop the confirmation of John Roberts and Samuel Alito. It was Nancy Keenan’s NARAL that endorsed undermining and humiliating the Connecticut affiliate and it was Nancy Keenan’s NARAL that backed loser Lincoln Chaffee as well. And it was Nancy Keenan’s NARAL that sold out on the so-called “Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act”, a bill based on junk science.

It seems to me that if you’re going to lead an organization dedicated to reproductive rights, you shouldn’t be saying like “As a Catholic, I accept the teaching of my church on abortion. That is my personal religious belief . . . As a public official, there is no question in my mind that depriving women of the right to follow their conscience is the same as imposing religious beliefs.”

Now, you might think “Brendan, if NARAL makes you so mad, why do you stay on their mailing list?”

I stay on their mailing list because as someone who has given to NARAL in the past, as someone who’s spent time, money, and energy in marches and rallies, and as someone who feels utterly betrayed by the national organization, I feel it’s my responsibility, at every opportunity, to point out that Nancy Keenan is a bullshit artist and failure, a millstone around the neck of the reproductive rights movement.

If you’re going to give to choice organizations, give at the local level, not the national, which is “corrupted by DC beltway politics.”
