January 27, 2007: United for Peace

End the War, Bring the Troops Home: March in Washington DC, January 27, 2007.

I’m most likely going down to add my body and voice to this march, even as I harbor doubts about its efficacy.

I marched several times in 2003. This was the year that the New York Times deliberately failed to cover a march in DC, and when called on their bullshit, offered up a mulligan two days later that undercounted the attendance. The year that the cops in DC herded protestors and reporters into a park, and arrested everyone. The year that millions marched around the country and the world, and nobody listened or even gave a shit.

Maybe things will be different this time: now that the Democrats have a majority in both houses of Congress, the appearance of millions on the mall will send a message that it’s OK to stand up to the adminsitration, OK to insist that that troops come home, OK to listen to and act on your constituents’ wishes.

Maybe things will be different this time. But probably not.
