Drinking Liberally, 12/10/06

Hey everyone,

Drinking Liberally is this Tuesday December 12 at the Tangier in Philadelphia, corner of 18th and Lombard Streets. We start around 6:00 PM, and go until things wind down. Bring a friend, and win a chance to give Noz a lift home (really, he needs one).

Anyway, I tried to write a light, snarky DL announcement this afternoon and couldn’t.

That’s because I am so angry about the whitewash, no-responsibility-attached Mark Foley report handed down by the bipartisan House Ethics committee. In case you haven’t heard about this particular pile of paper (and you might have missed it given that it was squeezed out Friday afternoon in the standard “let’s not look at this one” fashion we’ve come to expect of Washington), the results are in: House members were “negligent” but didn’t “break any rules” by not reporting what was going on with Mr. Foley, which everyone apparently knew about since at least 2001.

You can see the report here (warning, PDF).

You will note that two Pennsylvania representatives, Democratic and Republican, signed off on this report. I’ve called them to inquire as to what they were thinking. No one gave me a particularly insightful answer. Go figure.
This is beyond politics.
This is beyond partisanship.
This is the same disgusting Cover Your Butt/Other People’s Kids garbage, because we all know darn well that if it was any congresscritter’s teenage kid getting nasty emails from a 50 year old (of either sex) that the perp would be in the clink faster than you can say Jerry Lee Lewis.
You know, it’s barely been a year since Pennsylvania was rocked by the scandals surrounding the Philadelphia Archdiocese (warning, another PDF). I simply can’t believe that people can be this… this indecent and horrible. On both sides of the aisle.
Something should be done.

PS: Rahm? Rahm Emanuel, you’re just as guilty. That “D” hanging off your name doesn’t mean SHIT to me.
