Drinking Liberally 10/3/06: Despondency and Delight
I write today’s Drinking Liberally bulletin under a cloud of conflicted emotions. But first: we’ll be getting together as usual at the Tangier (18th and Lombard Streets) on Tuesday, October 3, at 6:00 PM.
One the one hand we have the disgusting, immoral, anti-American Congress gutting the bill of rights, suspending habeas corpus, and, with the cover of eleven cowardly Democrats, giving the President dictatorial powers. This “law” will take years to repeal, and is written so broadly that all Americans are at risk of being disappeared, sent to a Gulag without recourse to the courts, to be tortured and imprisoned for life.
On the other is the fun of seeing the disgusting, immoral, anti-American, politics-before-the-public GOP vermin scrambling to get their stories straight as their re-election campaign begins with Mark Foley (R-Pederast) stepping down after sending emails to 16-year-old boys urging them to slip out of the underpants and relax, replete with typos that could only have been caused by someone typing with one hand.
And, unlike the Abramoff scandal or the Iraq scandal or the Medicare Part D scandal or the Plame scandal or the 2000 election scandal or the Katrina scandal, it’s very easy for the public to understand what’s gone on here: a 52 year old man hit on a 16 year old boy repeatedly and no one did anything other than to protect him. This is the kind of thing that send fathers down to the hallway closet to grab the baseball bat, start cracking skulls, and taking names.
And the poo-poo hit the air conditioning at the most convenient time: on the first day of their campaign for re-election.
My advice to Democrats? Every time the GOP tries to bop the you over the head, Little Bunny Foofoo style, yelling “terror terror,” bop them back yelling “pedophile, pedophile!” Which I assume is already happenening.
So it’s with despondency and delight that I write this bulletin. There are five weeks before the election. The Republicans have been exposed as a party of perverts and enablers. Perhaps finally something will sink into the public’s collective consciousness that these people are not to be trusted with either our national security or our children’s. And perhaps the GOP will finally be turned out, and we can see some semblance of checks and balance return to our government.
